The hype and gushing reviews seemed at odds with the very okay novel I read, which is why I passed on reading The Glass Hotel. And the chosen one orphan, Dann Oryzon, was raised by dolphins rather than moisture farmers. ![]() ![]() The Fellowship of Light are overpowered Jedi, capable of mind controlling enemy captains to self-destruct entire fleets. The dark emperor Ylang-Ylang is an incorporeal evil force, a bit like Sauron, who absorbs and psychically tortures those around him, include his masochistic followers such as the four armed reptilian Lord Blorg. In Anxiety is the Dizziness of Freedom, a story about free-will and alternate timelines, a character says: At first it felt too simple, but it began to sparkle in the way it made accessible larger questions about free-will, time, and language. I’m picky about books for planes, and was relieved to find that Chiang’s prose was not only easy to read but captivating. I picked Ted Chiang’s short story collection the day before a flight (coincidentally in Bellevue, where he currently lives).
